First Bentley Edition of Sense and Sensibility, with illustrated frontispiece after Ferdinand Pickering This first interpreter of Austen was Ferdinand Pickering, illustrator of previous Bentley publications of the Gothic, romantic and domestic persuasion. They left for Hampshire the same day. Austen was forced to postpone publishing either of these completed novels by family financial troubles. These works, I felt, would be the most accessible, and I was curious what might surface if groups in different countries read the same title. Her books largely dealt with themes of love and a woman's role in the home. Emma sold well, but the new edition of Mansfield Park did poorly, and this failure offset most of the income from Emma.

Or is everything overshadowed by the advance of death? With these resources, Austen could provide her parents a comfortable old age, give Cassandra a permanent home and, perhaps, assist her brothers in their careers. Austen's literary strength lies in the delineation of character, especially of women, by delicate touches arising out of the most natural and everyday incidents in the life of the middle and upper classes, from which her subjects are generally taken. It is still in print; try the Penguin edition, with a fine introduction by Margaret Drabble. In the autumn both girls were sent home when they caught typhus and Austen nearly died. Subsequent American editions of the novels, presumably taking their cue from the British, continued to illustrate characters in Victorian dress into the late nineteenth century.

A new generation of TheOffice fans starts here. Scott and Whately set the tone for almost all subsequent 19th-century Austen criticism. Let the feathers fly! I must not depend upon being ever very blooming again.
